Nope, older Apple devices don’t get Apple Intelligence

Sad!

While in the recent years I have turned to iPhone for my daily smartphone usage, I am disappointed to see Apple not bringing Apple Intelligence to older devices. I do understand artificial intelligence takes a bit of CPU to compute, but given the fact Apple will be "offloading" some of the usage remotely, I don't see why some of the Intelligence couldn't be used. Then again, I don't work at Apple, do I?

Here is the supported device list according to Apple's website:

  • iPhone 16 A18
  • iPhone 16 Plus A18
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max A18 Pro
  • iPhone 16 Pro A18 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max A17 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro A17 Pro
  • iPad Pro M1 and later
  • iPad Air M1 and later
  • MacBook Air M1 and later
  • MacBook Pro M1 and later
  • iMac M1 and later
  • Mac mini M1 and later
  • Mac Studio M1 Max and later
  • Mac Pro M2 Ultra

Gemini isn't any better, only being supported on Pixel 9 and onwards, and nothing else of Google will replace Google Assistant. Kinda a janky way to deploy these new secretarial frameworks. But, other Android OEMs will support it (maybe?), and I'm sure open source will bring forth a way to use artificial intelligence on any older device. If the Raspberry Pi can do it, these "old" smartphones can!

Should artificial intelligence be on smartphones?
